After much debate and laughter, the topic for the first committee session was finally chosen: Netflix & Chill or going out?

Burqina Faso was one of the first countries which recommended going out as a better option. China quickly agreed, adding that they certainly do not promote Netflix and chill, since they’re already overpopulated, and they much prefer going out and meeting new people. The USA lightened the atmosphere by promptly asking if the delegate had, perhaps, ever heard of condoms?

France declared themselves as being the country of love; thus, they encourage people to make their preferred choice. Syria asked: what would the delegate’s choice be? France answered that, of course, it depends on the mood. Our lovely chair, Alexia Ieodin, inquired about the delegate’s current mood. The answer? “Probably Netflix and chill.” Who would have thought the delegate of France was such a bold one?

Italy and the USA seemed to agree on Netflix and Chill.  Burqina Faso quickly intervened, asking a good question: are both countries aware that people could be having intercourse even when going out? It seems the SOCHUM committee has good taste: the floor was dying of laughter almost instantly, though Italy remained speechless.

After a short speech on the topic, Russia accused the USA of being hypocritical with their arguments. The States demanded an apology, and so received the following: “We are sorry for stating facts”. As Russia said: it had the word “sorry” in it, didn’t it?

The highlight of the day, though, was the delegate of Syria. In their short speech, they declared that they will talk from a neutral point of view, since you can’t really go out or Netflix and chill in Syria, anyways. Regardless, they support either choice: they’re both fun if the people are alive and well! Another memorable quote from this delegate: “We don’t have the possibilities to support ANYTHING!”. Heavy emphasis on “anything” and the roaring laughter that took over the entire floor.

All in all, even if the delegates were reserved and even shy in the beginning, they warmed up quite quickly. Amidst procedural mistakes, unsure speeches and more than a few jokes, the SOCHUM committee had a lot of fun debating. For now, we can only wait to see what the next days of sessions will bring us. See you tomorrow!
