The DISEC committee had a great balance between chairpersons and delegates. The chairpersons were rightfully strict and the delegates provided much needed information. Other than that, they always corrected the delegates if they used the wrong form of pronouns or made any other mistakes in their debates. The delegate that I found to be most outstanding was that of China. He always tried to join in on the conversation and gave study-based information as examples to support his arguments. Moreover, he was very open-minded with his ideas and accepted
those of others if they had valid points. Another remarkable delegate was Russia, his only downside being the fact that he wasnʼt open to other points of view. Regarding the topics of discussion, the main subject was ‘The legalisation of marijuanaʼ. This was voted by the majority and China opened the debate talking about the benefits of its legalization. The delagate of UAE stongly disagreed, stating that their culture is completly against drugs. The delegate of China then said that marijuana has existed and been used way before Muslims existed. Another strong argument of those supporting the legalization of weed was the
medical purposes, as claimed by France, who quoted a study that showed that marijuana helps people struggling with depression, anxiety and even cancer, in some cases. China dismissed the argument to this statement by saying that weed has affected the mental health of people suffering from schizophrenia by worsening it. Another strong point was stated by the delegate of Turkey, who said that weed shouldnʼt be legalized for recreational purposes, because many studies have shown that the drug is really addictive. DISEC brought a very heated debate to the table, supporting it with many great arguments. Delegates
were clearly interested in this subject and expressed all their opinios in the most formal and respectable manner possible, which was appreciated by the chairpersons. Overall, it was a great experience for me to be a part of and to write an article about.
