Security Council, day 2

By Ada Georgescu

The first topic that was discussed was the independence of Somaliland and how it affects the country, proposed by Saudi Arbia. As a first opinion, it was obvious to the room that the USA would always have Somaliland’s back. The delegate of Russia stated that the the country’s whole currency and income was based on diaspora. Saudi Arabia said that the country’s autonomy would make it safer and more efficient. China thought that the area is controlled by the terrorists allegedly coming from there, making the place dangerous and a hard place to live in.

USA apologised, Somalia having the actual power over the discussed area. The UK spoke about how the land can actually do better, having a proper government, their own police force, plus a currency. Ethiopia testified that the UN does not recognise Somaliland. The USA said that, first things first, they should stop the actual civil war going on in that country. Saudi Arabia pointed out that a higher degree of autonomy would help the country and would make the things a lot more different. The UK proposed that the delegates should continue this debate for 5 more minutes. China continued by saying that there should be more political agenda in the area.

Ethiopia said that this debate isn’t relevant and that should actually talk about terrorism, military and corruption in Somaliland. USA then explained why the currently debated topic is important.
